The 800W limit for plug-in solar, explained
Every legal UK plug-in kit can feed at most 800W into your home. The panels themselves can be bigger, but the inverter caps what goes into the socket.
What the limit is
- The UK product specification for plug-in solar caps output at 800W.DESNZ
- All compliant UK devices are capped at 800W going into the socket.Energy Saving Trust
- Panels can produce more, for example two 450W panels, but the microinverter limits what goes into the socket. Some makers call this clipping.Energy Saving Trust
Why 800W
- Government testing didn't find safety concerns that would stop 800W devices working safely on properly protected ring circuits.DESNZ
- The UK specification uses Germany's plug-in solar standard as its starting point, with UK changes. The government says the UK rules are stricter than Germany's.DESNZ, GOV.UK
What 800W runs
The government says a kit in sunshine could power a fridge, TV, Wi-Fi router, laptop, phone charger and a games console at the same time, and supply up to 20% of an average home's electricity.
Common questions
Can I get a bigger plug-in solar kit than 800W?
Not as a plug-in kit. Compliant kits are capped at 800W into the socket. For more, you'd need rooftop solar fitted by an installer. Compare the two
Why do some kits have more than 800W of panels?
Bigger panels make more in dull weather and in the morning and evening, but the inverter never sends more than 800W into the socket.
