Which socket can I plug a solar panel into?
A normal wall socket, plugged in directly, on a circuit with no lights or fixed appliances. Here are the rules and the fuse box check to do first.
The socket
- Plug the kit straight into a mains socket. Outdoors is best, but an indoor socket can work.Energy Saving Trust
- No extension leads, international adaptors or altered plugs. The cable has to reach the socket on its own.Energy Saving Trust
- The socket must be on a circuit with no lighting or hardwired appliances, such as a boiler or cooker.Energy Saving Trust
- An outdoor socket must be weatherproof, ideally rated at least IP65, and fitted by a qualified electrician.Energy Saving Trust
- Find out which circuit a socket is on by switching off one breaker at a time. If you're unsure, ask a certified electrician.Energy Saving Trust
The fuse box
- Modern consumer units have circuit breakers labelled RCD, RCBO or MCB, which give the protection needed.Energy Saving Trust
- If your fuse box has old-style rewireable fuses or fuse carriers, don't install plug-in solar.Energy Saving Trust
- Every six months, press the test button on your consumer unit while the panel is generating in daylight. If it doesn't trip, unplug the kit and call an electrician.Energy Saving Trust
- Have your electrics inspected every 10 years, or every five if you rent.Energy Saving Trust
When to get an electrician
- If your fuse box has rewireable fuses, you're unsure about your wiring, you need to move or add a socket, or the panels' total power is over 960W.Energy Saving Trust
- Don't modify the kit or link several kits together.Energy Saving Trust
Common questions
Can I use an extension lead with a plug-in solar panel?
No. The Energy Saving Trust's guidance is to plug the kit directly into the socket. Extension leads, adaptors and altered plugs aren't allowed.
Does the socket have to be outside?
No. Outdoors is ideal, but an indoor socket can be used if the cable reaches it directly. A new outdoor socket must be weatherproof and fitted by a qualified electrician.
