Does plug-in solar work in winter?
Yes, but it makes far less. A south-facing kit in central England makes about 25 kWh in December against 97 kWh in June.
Month by month
kWh a month from an 800W kit. Our figures from EU PVGIS 5.3 solar data.
Why winter is so much lower
Days are shorter and the sun is lower, so less light reaches the panel. Cloud cuts output in any season, but panels still make some electricity on overcast days. Snow or frost on the panel stops it until it clears.
Over a year, the six months from April to September make about 69% of the total.
Getting the most in winter
- A steeper angle helps when the sun is low. Upright panels lose less in winter than flat ones. Angles compared
- Keep the panel clear of leaves, snow and new shade from bare branches.
- Run the dishwasher or washing machine in the middle of the day, when the panel is making the most.
Common questions
Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Yes, but much less. Cloud reduces the light reaching the panel, so output drops. Our monthly figures are long-term averages, which include cloudy days.
How much does a plug-in solar panel make in December?
About 25 kWh in the month for a south-facing 800W kit at 30° in Birmingham, based on EU PVGIS averages.
