Do you get paid for spare electricity from plug-in solar?
Don't count on it. The government's savings figures only count the electricity you use yourself.
Where the saving comes from
- The government's figures assume a south-facing kit makes 690 kWh a year, of which 62% (428 kWh) is used at home. Its £110 saving comes from that home use.DESNZ
- The government's savings figures don't include any payment for electricity that goes back to the grid.DESNZ
- The government's response to its consultation doesn't set out export payment arrangements for plug-in solar.DESNZ
How to save more
Use the electricity while the panel is making it: run the washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer in the middle of the day, and charge things then. Whatever the panel makes while you're out isn't saving you money.
Common questions
Will my smart meter go backwards with plug-in solar?
Your meter records the electricity you take from the grid. When the panel covers part of what you're using, you take less from the grid, and that's the saving.
Can I get the Smart Export Guarantee for plug-in solar?
The government's plug-in solar rules don't set out export payments, and its savings figures don't include them. Ask your energy supplier if you want to check.
